| Athletes go up for sale
A lap dance from water polo player Sean Williams is worth exactly $16 -- or at least it was last night in a fundraiser at HUB Heritage Hall. Attendees of the Penn State Marketing Association (PSMA) Date Auction watched as lacrosse player Megan McGuire "bought" Williams. Bidders on the water polo player were not only paying for a date with him, but for a lap dance Williams promised, which McGuire received on stage immediately after the bidding on Williams closed. "It was hot," McGuire said, laughing. "I didn't really expect him to do it up there, but hey, whatever." PSMA held the event as a way to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand, an organization that deals with pediatric cancer. "We came up with the idea because we were looking for a way to raise money, just in general, whether for an organization or for a charity," Jessica Hoffman, a member of PSMA and co-chair of the event, said.
Plan commission fights to power tariff-based bidding
NEW DELHI: The power ministry's attempt to give a quiet burial to the tariff-based competitive route for the hydel sector has run into trouble. The proposed move to a cost-plus regime for hydro power was considered by some states such as Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. However, the states continued to award projects to private players on considerations other than tariff. The Planning Commission isn't in favour of stopping the route. It is making a last ditch attempt to make tariff-based competitive bidding work for hydro power projects. For the 11th Plan, the commission has suggested setting up a hydro power viability fund that will allow developers to defer a portion of the tariff to be recovered from consumers after the first 10 years of the project. The proposed fund has been suggested to offset the high cost of generation in the initial 4-5 years of the projects.
S. Korea solicits foreign bids for fighter jet purchase project
SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's defense procurement agency said Wednesday that it will invite foreign bids again on its plan to procure 20 advanced combat aircraft by 2012, as Boeing Co. of the United States is the only company that has shown interest in the US$2.4 billion contract. The bid was expected to become a three-way competition, but no other company made a bid for the project before the deadline, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). "Officials from Boeing Co. Lockheed Martin, and Eurofighter attended a presentation session on March 9, but only Boeing submitted a bid proposal by 3 p.m. today," the agency said in a press release. "We plan to invite bidders once again in accordance with related law." A DAPA spokesman said if Boeing makes the sole bid again, South Korea will enter into price bargaining with the company.
Border concert to raise money for drought-relief
IN light of the devastating effects of the drought in rural and regional Australia, the youth management committee at The Retro Youth Cafe has decided to hold a drought relief concert during Youth Week, on April 14, 2007 at Hovell Tree Park, to raise much needed funds to help support those in our community who are needing assistance. We hope to raise both money and the profile of the effects of the drought, as this problem has been raised as a high priority for our youth committee and young people utilising the cafe. We have been busy contacting local bands, rides, local stall holders, and also co-ordinating prizes for raffles and auctions, a Miss Drought Relief fashion parade, a petting zoo and plenty more. We have aimed to give a traditionally "youth" style event, both a rural and community feel, so that there is something for all ages to enjoy.
