'Wildlife sanctuary' up for auction
A PIECE of countryside described by local residents as a "wildlife sanctuary" has been put up for auction raising fears that it could be bulldozed by developers. The field off Stag Lane, Chorleywood, is being advertised as "land with potential" on the Driver Norris auction site, despite the fact that there is no planning permission for the 1.5-acre Green Belt site. Residents are so concerned by the implications of a sale that they are considering buying the land themselves and returning it to Three Rivers District Council to protect it. But with a minimum asking price of £90,000, it is unlikely they will be able to match competing bids when it goes to auction on Tuesday. Read more about this story in tomorrow's Watford Observer. .
Burlco eyes Web auctions
Burlington County plans to join other local governments in auctioning government surplus items on the Web. The Burlington County Freeholders authorized its treasurer's office to sign an agreement with GovDeals Inc., which operates an Internet auction site called www.govdeals.com. The freeholders said they will sell vehicles and office equipment to the public online to make more money, save time and attract more bidders. Sharon Brauckmann, county purchasing agent, said the auction would be held later this year and not until the state Department of Community Affairs gives its approval. She said the state must approve a county application to waive the normal local public auction using an auctioneer. Kurt Brock, the county's chief financial officer, said the state is approving Internet auctions of government property only on eBay and GovDeals.
'Bids for Kids' to aid teachers
After serving in the Legislature, former Utah Sen. Paula Julander thought she knew it all when it came to financially strapped schools. Then she became director of the 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation. "Microscopes, computers, kilns, art supplies, rugs to teach kids geography" Julander begins to rattle off the list of supplies Utah teachers are lacking. Since its inception in 2002, the foundation has been raising money through Utah credit unions to try to make a dent in curriculum core funding needs. This Saturday, the foundation is holding its first-ever public fund-raiser. The event will be held at the Salt Lake City downtown library and will include a silent auction. It's a family event, Julander notes, and includes a "No-Adult Auction" where children can bid on small items.
