Stanner's trophy will hit the auction room

A SOLID silver trophy awarded to Widnes boxing legend Jack Stan-ner in 1935 for winning five Wembley fights on the same day is being sold by his family.

Auctioneers Rogers-Jones of Colwyn Bay will sell the trophy together with a small archive of photographs and press cuttings on Tuesday, April 24.

The lot is estimated at £1,000-£1,500. The trophy relates to the 'great white hope' championships held annually with promoters inviting contenders to make a name for themselves on an unofficial but national stage.

Six-footer Stanner later fought professionally but had been a 16-year-old amateur when he first qualified for the novices championship at heavyweight in 1934.

Although he was giving away two to three stone to more experienced boxers, his two-fisted approach took him through to the third series, losing to Archie Norman.

Wahine flag sold in online auction

A flag said to have come from the stricken Wahine passenger ferry has been sold in an internet auction for more than $5,000.

Fifty-one people died when the Wahine capsized after striking Barretts Reef at the entrance to Wellington Harbour in April 1968.

The flag and a witnessed affadavit of its recovery were listed on the internet auction site Trademe with a reserve price of $5,000.

In the affadavit, the owner says he found the flag on the shoreline in Eastbourne the day after the Wahine sank, while helping police in their search efforts.

The auction generated a last-minute bidding war, and the flag finally sold for $5,200.

AEP bidding for wind purchases in eastern US

American Electric Power said Tuesday that it issued two requests for proposals seeking long-term wind energy purchase agreements.

According to AEP, the proposals are part of the first steps of the company toward its goal of adding 1,000 megawatts of new wind energy by 2011 and a "comprehensive strategy to address greenhouse gas emissions."

The requests for proposals are for up to 260 megawatts of wind energy for AEPs Appalachian Power utility unit and up to 100 megawatts of wind energy for AEPs Indiana Michigan Power utility unit, the company said.

The 360 megawatts of wind energy included in the two RFPs equals almost 60 percent of the currently installed wind generation in the PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission organization that covers all or parts of 13 states ranging from Illinois to North Carolina to New Jersey.
