Tanzania beefs up anti-corruption law

NAIROBI, April 23 (Reuters) - Tanzania has passed a new anti-graft law giving corruption fighters in the east African country more power to target areas like government procurement and money laundering, a minister said on Monday.

Stamping out graft has been among President Jakaya Kikwete's top priorities since he came to power in late 2005. The new legislation gives the state-run Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau the power to seize assets from the guilty.

"The most weighted (crimes) deal with grand corruption like procurement, money laundering and corruption in auctions," Philip Marmo, minister of state for good governance in the president's office, told Reuters by phone from Dar es Salaam.

The law, approved by parliament last week, will come into force with Kikwete's assent, he said, probably within a month.

Brazil's Currency Rises as Traders See Dollar Inflows Growing

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil's real rose for a fifth day on speculation increased central bank dollar purchases are unlikely to stem the currency's rally.

Banco Central do Brasil said on April 13 it would make its actions in currency markets less predictable and would no longer disclose in advance its reverse currency swap auctions.

``The central bank's reverse swaps may not have enough strength to bring the dollar higher because inflows coming into the country in the form of financial and commercial investments are growing,'' Alex Agostini, an analyst with Sao Paulo-based Austin Ratings, said in an interview.

The real gained 0.4 percent to 2.0251 per dollar at 12:20 a.m. New York time. It fell less than 0.1 percent earlier today. On April 13, the real touched 2.0190 per dollar, its strongest since March 6, 2001.
