Buyers question practices of cruise ship art auctions

Like thousands of tourists, Gary and Olga Holloway went on a Caribbean cruise for relaxation. The Scottsdale couple also wound up learning about fine art thanks to Park West at Sea, a company that conducts onboard auctions.

Before the trip was over last June, they had spent $17,836 on three limited-edition prints by Rembrandt van Rijn, plus one by Dali.

Gary Holloway was thrilled with his sophisticated investment, backed by appraisals and letters of authenticity. .

DJ US Cash Grain Review:Corn/Soybean Basis Firm, Wheat Bids Weak

CENTRAL CITY, Neb. (Dow Jones)--Cash corn and soybean basis strengthened Wednesday, as increasing numbers of U.S. farmers began to migrate toward spring fieldwork, thereby limiting country movement. Wheat basis was generally weak.

With increasing numbers of growers manning field tractors instead of their grain trucks, domestic and export basis for corn and soybeans averaged about 1-2 cents per bushel higher.

"Cash corn is becoming a 'hot item' in some parts of the corn belt right now," said an Iowa grain buyer. "After seeing multiple chances to sell $4 cash corn this winter, many (farmers) are content to wait out the spring planting season before exiting additional old-crop supplies. The prevailing mood seems to be: 'If I'm going to sell the last of my old-crop cheaper, I at least want to know the new-crop is off to a good start'."

Wheat basis held a weaker undertone at all levels of the cash market Wednesday, with CIF HRW/SRW values dropping 2 cents throughout the course of the day and interior spring wheat premiums falling by an average of over 2 cents entering the trading session.

Japan to avoid JGB auctions on BOJ policy days

TOKYO, March 27 (Reuters) - Japan's Ministry of Finance has begun scheduling Japanese government bond auctions so that they do not coincide with Bank of Japan policy announcements, in line with requests from investors, the ministry said on Tuesday.

To avoid market volatility, offers for JGBs with coupons, financing bills, treasury bills and special debt will not be held on days that the BOJ is slated to announce policy decisions, starting with the June line-up of auctions released on Tuesday.

"Markets can become volatile when the BOJ makes policy announcements due to a wide range of news and information that comes out," Naoyuki Yoshino, head of the MOF's regular forum with JGB investors, told reporters following a meeting on Tuesday.

"It would be best to avoid holding auctions at such times."

The MOF's last 30-year JGB auction was held on the final day of the BOJ's two-day policy meeting in January, when the central bank surprised many in the market by keeping rates steady at 0.25 percent.
